How we calculate the real cost

Every figure on Kilómetro Real comes from the same public method, so you can compare any car with any other on equal terms.

What we add up

  • Depreciation: list price minus the car's estimated value when you sell it, based on each brand's average depreciation. Electric and plug-in cars get slightly higher depreciation.
  • Energy: estimated real-world consumption times your mileage. For electric cars we mix home and public charging; for plug-in hybrids, the share of kilometres you can drive on electricity if you charge daily.
  • Insurance: an estimate for extended third-party cover for a 35-year-old driver, based on the car's value.
  • Servicing: typical maintenance, tyres and wear for each powertrain.
  • Road tax: average municipal tax by power, with the usual discount for electric cars.
